The GEMS Winchester School – Dubai opened in 2011 to address the increasing demand for school places in Dubai and in particular in GEMS schools. Located in the heart of old Dubai in Oud Metha, the school occupies a site of significant historical interest. It was here that over forty years ago GEMS opened its first purpose built school – Our Own English School. When this school relocated to new premises, the Winchester School – Dubai was born and has successfully continued the GEMS legacy of quality education on the newly refurbished site. In Lycée Français International Georges Pompidou, most children demonstrated excellent knowledge, skills and understanding in the five elements of literacy. The outcomes were above French curriculum standards. Information from assessments indicated that almost all groups of children were making better than expected progress, in relation to appropriate starting points, in communication and comprehension. In English, almost all children attained above age-appropriate levels of spoken language as measured by the Common European Framework. The attainment of children in Kindergarten 2, particularly in speaking, was above international standards. The children were able to talk about the cycle race in Dubai and accurately describe the clothing they would wear if they were cycling. Children listened attentively in class and showed outstanding understanding through their answers and follow-up questions. Almost all children were able to build on their skills in speaking, listening and understanding as measured against the learning objectives of the lesson In mathematics, most children demonstrated a profound understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts and skills above international standards.

In 2006, building on over 40 years of tradition and reputation for academic excellence, DESS opened its own Secondary school, Dubai English Speaking College (DESC) in impressive modern buildings in Academic City. We now look to the future, providing quality British education for children up to the age of 18 and preparing our students for university entry and adulthood. In September 2014 DESS opened a brand new FS1 facility. As we celebrated 50 years in 2013, it is with great pride that we look back on the school’s progress since its beginnings in 1963.
