Brighton College Dubai Pupils Soar Above UK Reading-Age Benchmarks On World Book Day

On World Book Day, Brighton College Dubai, the premier British curriculum school, is proud to champion its ongoing commitment to fostering a ‘love of reading’ through various initiatives and innovative programmes.

A recent analysis of data from current Year 1 pupils who have been with Brighton College Dubai since FS1 showcases the remarkable progress achieved by pupils under the College’s guidance, with 93% of pupils working above the UK age-related expectations for reading.

With a special focus on literacy, the College has implemented a range of initiatives designed to cultivate a lifelong love of reading while supporting pupils in their literary journey. Reading for pleasure underpins everything in the Pre-Prep school, with children in each class enjoying one or more reading-for-pleasure sessions a day. The Reading Buddy system complements these reading-for-pleasure sessions and provides the children with opportunities to share books with their ‘buddies’ from other year groups, promoting camaraderie and joy while reading. Daily phonics lessons teach pupils the mechanical skills of reading to enable them to become independent readers while seamlessly weaving in opportunities to develop their reading fluency, speed and comprehension skills.

Brighton College Dubai recognises the importance of integrating reading across the curriculum and provides pupils with ample opportunities to explore texts and apply their reading skills in subjects other than English. Daily reading and phonics interventions are also allocated for any child from FS2 to Year 2 who needs additional support to ‘keep up, not catch up’.

Mr Simon Crane, Head Master at Brighton College Dubai said: At Brighton College Dubai we really do instill a love of reading with our pupils across all year groups from an early age. Our focus means that pupils in year groups as young as FS1 get a great head start. Wethen assess pupils’ reading abilities regularly to allow us to understand each child’s reading level and tailor our teaching to meet their individual needs accurately, ensuring that they only continue to excel. This love of reading extends well into their later years and adulthood, and it’s a wonderful gift to give.”

To further support pupils’ reading journeys, Brighton College Dubai has invested in creating welcoming reading spaces within the Pre-Prep corridor and has expanded its collection of reading materials across its libraries to encourage reading for pleasure throughout the school day.

As Brighton College Dubai continues to cultivate well-read pupils, the College remains committed to its mission of providing an exceptional British education that prepares them for success in an ever-changing world.
